I made this piece and then noticed how much it reminded me of a game board, with its play pieces filling in each square. So began a series of paper game boards that culminated in the solo show Toying With the World at American Primitive Gallery. The rubber rings are from inside a garden hose. One such ring was sitting on my work table and it simply beckoned to be filled; thus the wooden plugs were cut to the right diameter, sanded and painted one by one. I pinned up each finished square on my large bulletin board and kept moving them around until I was satisfied with the composition. Always I resist glueing down these elements, because in my mind they should keep switching places.
